This is an IMO approved ship/shore safety checklist for use by ship and terminal operators. It incorporates guidance on completion and includes an example loading/unloading plan.

This checklist is designed to be completed jointly by ship and terminal personnel before commencement of operations. It improves operational safety by recording how the transfer will be conducted and clarifying the responsibilities of both parties.

The purpose of the Ship/Shore Safety Checklist is to improve working relationships between ship and terminal, and thereby to improve the safety of operations. Misunderstandings occur and mistakes can be made when ships’ officers do not understand the intentions of the terminal personnel, and the same applies when terminal personnel do not understand what the ship can and cannot safely do.

Completing the checklist together is intended to help ship and terminal personnel to recognise potential problems, and to be better prepared for them. The numbering of the guidelines below corresponds to the question numbers on the checklist.

ICS

The International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) is the principal international trade association for the shipping industry, representing shipowners and operators in all sectors and trades.

ICS membership comprises national shipowners’ associations in Asia, Europe and the Americas whose member shipping companies operate over 80% of the world’s merchant tonnage.

Established in 1921, ICS is concerned with all technical, legal, employment affairs and policy issues that may affect international shipping.

ICS represents shipowners with the various intergovernmental regulatory bodies that impact on shipping, including the International Maritime Organization.

ICS also develops best practices and guidance, including a wide range of publications and free resources that are used by ship operators globally.
