This publication is a step by step guide to marine bulk cargo measurement (MBCM) surveys, including receipt of instructions, equipment, draught and displacement calculations, sounding and completion of MBCM survey documentations.

This guide is an outline of the marine bulk cargo measurement (MBCM) surveys process from beginning to end. It begins with a description of the survey, key definitions and terms, before looking at:

  • General error notes
  • receipt of application
  • determining onboard quantities
  • draught and displacement calculations
  • taking soundings
  • calculating cargo quantities
  • completion of survey documentation.

Foreword

This book is addressed to both marine surveyors and ships’ officers and is a source of ‘theory into practice’ applications for naval architects.

The basics of naval architecture are outlined so that you can follow and understand the steps taken during a marine bulk cargo measurement (MBCM) survey. This might also be known as a ‘draught survey’.

MBCM surveys are usually carried out on bulk carriers, a type of ship that has undergone substantial changes and improvements since the 1990s.

However, while the size of the ships has steadily increased and their designs have changed, the original principles and concepts of naval architecture remain unchanged.
