This latest edition of ‘Navigation for Masters’ has been issued to ensure that current and future Master Mariners are kept up to date with the modern concepts and innovations affecting safe passage throughout the maritime environment. For example:

• Our planet is experiencing a state of continual change, with global warming affecting the higher latitudes

• navigation is becoming more demanding and security issues are becoming increasingly important

• new regulations introducing long-range identification and tracking of vessels have come into force

• ice reporting in the high latitudes, in the form of the ‘Egg Code’, has become a necessity

• larger and deeper draught vessels continue to be built, necessitating revision and expansion of deep water routes

• electronic and digital advances have given the maritime industry ECDIS and GPS.

It is essential that Masters meet the challenges associated with these and other changes, whilst at the same time not losing sight of the basic principles of effective watchkeeping. Training and lifelong learning are as much a part of a successful voyage as fuel is to the engines.

David House

During his sea going career, David House served on a variety of vessels including dry and bulk cargo ships, passenger liners, containers and ferries. He came ashore in 1978 with a Master Mariner's qualification and began teaching at the Fleetwood Nautical College. He retired from teaching in 2012 but continues to research and write on a number of maritime subjects.
