This bundle of four online self-assessment modules is designed to help deck officers prepare for mates and masters oral examinations. It covers the COLREGS, radar and Rule 19, buoyage and navigation lights through 70 scenario-based questions.

Each module presents a series of bridge scenarios, illustrated with images and radar displays, and asks the learner to select the correct action or identification. Once an answer has been selected, the model response is shown so that the learner can compare their reasoning with the expected answer.

The modules do not teach the rules. They assume the learner has already studied the COLREGS and the IALA Maritime Buoyage System, and test how well that knowledge is applied. The feedback helps the learner establish whether an error lies in recognition, such as identifying the wrong mark or vessel type, or in application, such as selecting the wrong action for the situation.

There is no scoring. The modules can be repeated as often as required during exam preparation.

On completion, the learner will have tested their collision avoidance decisions, radar assessments, buoyage identification and light interpretation against model answers, and identified the areas requiring further study before the examination.

Oral examiners expect candidates to do more than quote the relevant rule. A complete answer identifies the situation, the applicable rule and the action to be taken, in the correct sequence.

Common errors include treating the stand-on vessel as having no further duties, applying the give-way and stand-on rules in restricted visibility, confusing Region A and Region B lateral marks, and stating that a vessel is making way when her lights only indicate that she may be.

These self-assessments are designed to identify such gaps before the examination.

Module 1: COLREGS

Crossing, overtaking and head-on situations, responsibilities between vessels under Rule 18, traffic separation schemes, narrow channels, sound signals and the duties of the stand-on vessel.

Module 2: Radar

Assessment of risk of collision from the radar display, target position relative to the beam, and the action permitted under Rule 19 in restricted visibility, including multiple-target situations.

Module 3: Buoyage

Lateral and preferred channel marks, cardinal marks, isolated danger marks, safe water marks, special marks and emergency wreck marking buoys, including marks from IALA Regions A and B.

Module 4: COLREGS Lights

Identification of vessel type, aspect and status from navigation light displays, including fishing vessels, towing configurations, vessels not under command, vessels restricted in their ability to manoeuvre, vessels constrained by their draught, pilot vessels, vessels at anchor and vessels aground.
