This is a practical handbook covering all the elements of onboard training and is designed to make training more effective, enjoyable and rewarding. This Fifth Edition has been updated to incorporate technological advances in maritime training and the entry into force of the 2010 Manila Amendments to the STCW Convention.

This publication, based upon extensive experience of managers and trainers, examines the fundamental issues that underpin all forms of training and helps ensure that managers, trainers and trainees make the best use of education and training opportunities on board.

Topics include:

  • For trainees: how to improve learning capability
  • For designated shipboard training officers (STOs): guidance on designing, planning, delivering, assessing, evaluating and recording a training event
  • For the Master: responsibilities under STCW and the company’s SMS and how to have a positive influence on onboard training
  • How to assess whether training has had the desired impact
