Marine Safety Card: Entry into Enclosed Spaces
This safety card identifies common locations of onboard enclosed spaces and lists the precautions that should be taken before and during enclosed space entry. The reverse side is a safety checklist covering essential safety checks, actions and equipment. The card has a wipe clean finish enabling it to be reused for every enclosed space entry.
The atmosphere inside an enclosed space may be toxic, flammable or deficient in oxygen to the extent that it endangers the life or health of anyone entering. This card raises awareness of the risks and highlights areas on board that must be considered hazardous.
The safety checklist sets out the checks that must be completed by a competent person or officer authorised by the Master and by the person(s) entering the space, covering preparation and testing of the space, ventilation, breathing apparatus, lighting, communication and emergency response.
An enclosed space is one that has limited openings for entry and exit, has inadequate ventilation and is neither designed nor safe for continuous worker occupation. The atmosphere in any enclosed space may contain toxic or flammable gases or vapours, or be deficient in oxygen, to the extent that it may endanger the life or health of any person entering that space. As such, an awareness of potential risks is necessary for all spaces on board ship. If there is any doubt, any such space should be regarded as dangerous and appropriate action taken.
