Key Register - 1st Edition (2026)
This Key Register provides a systematic record of all keys held on board ship, their locations, assignments and issue history. While no international convention mandates a standalone key register, controlled management of ship keys is an operational requirement that supports the access control provisions of the ship's approved Ship Security Plan (SSP), as required under the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code, given mandatory effect through Chapter XI-2 of the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS).
Systematic use of this Key Register enables the Master and Ship Security Officer to:
- Maintain a complete inventory of all keys on board and their assigned holders, supporting the access control measures defined in the Ship Security Plan under ISPS Code, Part A, Section 9.4
- Track the issue and return of keys to individual crew members with a signed chain of custody
- Identify lost, missing or unaccounted-for keys and take appropriate security action
- Demonstrate to port state control inspectors and ISM auditors that access control procedures are systematically implemented and documented within the ship's safety management system.
