Deck Logbook - 1st Edition (2026)
This Deck Logbook provides a systematic record of navigational activities, meteorological observations, voyage data and bridge operations in accordance with SOLAS Chapter V, Regulation 28. This rule requires applicable ships to keep on board a record of navigational activities and incidents that are important to the safety of navigation, containing sufficient detail to restore a complete record of the voyage.
The positional, course and weather recording fields on each daily page support the requirements of SOLAS Chapter V, Regulation 28.1, in conjunction with the Guidelines for the Recording of Events Related to Navigation - IMO Resolution A.916(22). These Guidelines recommend that records include courses steered and distances sailed, position fixings, weather and sea conditions, changes to the voyage plan, details of pilots' embarkation and disembarkation, entry into areas covered by ship routeing or reporting systems, and details of any special events affecting the safety of navigation.
The columns in this logbook (covering GNSS position, true and gyro courses, compass course and error, log reading, cross-track error, wind direction and force, sea direction and height, cloud cover, visibility, barometric pressure and air temperature) provide an efficient format for capturing this information at regular intervals during the navigational watch.
Voyage Planning, Monitoring and Reporting: SOLAS Chapter V, Regulation 34 requires the Master to ensure that the intended voyage has been planned. The logbook supports the monitoring and execution stages of voyage planning, providing a continuous record of the vessel's progress against the planned passage.
Bridge Watchkeeping: The bridge team section of each daily page records the Officer of the Watch and lookout on duty, reflecting the watchkeeping requirements of the STCW Convention, 1978, as amended, Section A-VIII/2, which establishes the principles to be observed in keeping a navigational watch, including the requirement for a proper lookout and the qualifications of the OOW.
The narrative section provides space for recording key navigation events, including changes of watch, helm orders, alterations of course and speed, collision-avoidance actions, and any navigational incidents or hazards encountered.

Systematic use of this Deck Logbook enables the Master and navigating officers to:
