Course Criteria for Ships Using Fuels Subject to the IDF Code - 3rd Edition
The aim of this publication is to provide seafarers with the necessary knowledge, understanding and proficiency to carry out safe and effective operation of ships powered by fuels covered within the IGF Code.
The specifications described in this document have been developed by the Merchant Navy Training Board (MNTB) and the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA). Tables A-V/3-1 and A-V/3-2 of Regulation V/3 from the STCW Code list the knowledge, understanding and proficiency required to competently operate ships powered by these fuels, in addition to criteria against which competency can be measured.
1.1 This document provides the criteria for the development of courses to deliver training for service on ships subject to the International Code of Safety for Ships Using Gases or Other Low-flashpoint Fuels (IGF Code) at basic and advanced levels, in accordance with international regulations for seafarer training.
1.2 Training courses developed in line with these criteria, and delivered at centres approved by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA), will cover:
- Basic training for service on ships using fuels subject to the IGF Code (Section Two)

- Revalidation training requirements (Section Four).
1.3 The specifications described in this document have been developed by the Merchant Navy Training Board (MNTB) in conjunction with the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA). The MCA, on behalf of the Secretary of State, is responsible for approving the courses and their content, which enables a training provider to issue the corresponding course completion certificate or STCW Certificate of Proficiency.
1.4 The MCA has agreed with the MNTB that the specifications described in this document will satisfy the requirements for training. A course developed shall be approved by the MCA in accordance with the approval process described in Annex A.
