This document provides the requirements for Electronic Chart Display and Information Systems (ECDIS) certification, set out in Chapter II of the 1978 STCW Convention, as amended. It is a practical guide for trainees seeking proficiency in watchkeeping and safe navigation.
This publication contains training outcomes, guidance on simulator exercises and corresponding sections of the STCW Code, against which seafarers can assess their competence in operational use of ECDIS. The purpose of simulator exercises is explained, with distinctions drawn between support, management and watchkeeper roles. Relevant tables from the STCW Code support trainees in their briefing and debriefing discussions.
This document provides the requirements for Electronic Chart Display and Information Systems (ECDIS) certification, set out in Chapter II of the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) International Convention of Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers, 1978 (STCW Convention), as amended, and corresponding sections of the STCW Code.
Training courses developed in line with these criteria and delivered at centres approved by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) will cover the mandatory minimum requirements for the safe use of ECDIS.
The specifications described in this document have been developed by the Merchant Navy Training Board (MNTB) in conjunction with the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA).
The MCA has agreed with the MNTB that the specifications described in this document will satisfy the requirements for training. A course developed to deliver ECDIS shall be approved by the MCA in accordance with the approval process described in Annex A. Guidance on simulator exercises can be found in Annex B.
The national occupational standards relating to this training are:
- B02 – Maintain a navigational watch
- B11 – Initiate the response to navigation emergencies.
The aims of the training are to equip the candidate with the fundamental knowledge and skills needed to keep a safe navigational watch using Electronic Chart Display and Information Systems (ECDIS), interfaced with other onboard equipment, to maintain safety of navigation.
