Produced in accordance with:

- International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW) 1978, as amended - Chapter VIII: 'Standards regarding watchkeeping', Section A-VIII/2 Part 4-2: 'Principles to be observed in keeping an engineering watch'

- International Safety Management (ISM) Code - Section 7, 'Shipboard operations' and Section 10 'Maintenance of the ship and equipment'

- International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) 1974, as amended - Chapter IX: 'Management for the safe operation of ships'

This Night Order Book provides a systematic record of the Chief Engineer's standing and night instructions to engineering watchkeepers, including special operational precautions, machinery conditions, defects, restrictions, and escalation requirements necessary for the keeping of a safe engineering watch, in accordance with the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW), 1978, as amended.

Systematic use of this Chief Engineer's Night Order Book enables the Chief Engineer and engineering watchkeepers to:

- Demonstrate that engineering watchkeeping instructions are being communicated and acknowledged in accordance with STCW Code Section A-VIII/2, Part 4-2

- provide a traceable record of standing and night orders for review during ISM audits, flag state surveys, and port state control inspections

- ensure that machinery conditions, defects, restrictions, and special precautions are formally communicated to the watchkeeper rather than relying on verbal handover alone

- record the link between maintenance conditions (ISM Code Section 10) and the conduct of the engineering watch, ensuring that defects, temporary measures, and critical equipment status are reflected in watchkeeping instructions.
