This Sounding Logbook provides a systematic record of tank soundings, ullages, temperatures and calculated volumes on board ship. While no international convention mandates a standalone sounding logbook, accurate and regular measurement of tank contents is an operational requirement that underpins compliance with the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS), the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL), and the International Management Code for the Safe Operation of Ships and for Pollution Prevention (ISM Code).
Systematic use of this Sounding Logbook enables the Master, Chief Officer and Chief Engineer to:
- Verify the ship’s actual loading condition against the approved stability booklet, as required under SOLAS Chapter II-1, Regulation 5-1, and the 2008 IS Code
- provide an auditable tank measurement record supporting entries in the Oil Record Book required under MARPOL Annex I, Regulation 17
- detect leaks, unexpected consumption, gauge malfunctions or unrecorded transfers by comparing successive readings.
