After more than forty years in the maritime industry, first as a deck officer, then progressing all the way to Master, then as a marine surveyor, I have witnessed countless interactions between crews and surveyors. Some have been models of professional cooperation, leading to improved safety and operational efficiency. Others have been exercises in mutual frustration and failed communication, with missed opportunities for genuine improvement.
The ?Mariner?s Guide to Marine Surveys and Inspections? is written in the belief that the best survey outcomes occur when crews understand what surveyors are trying to achieve and how they can contribute to that process. The worst outcomes typically result from misunderstanding, poor preparation and adversarial attitudes, which can lead to operational delays and failed surveys, as well as detention of the ship.
The idea for this book came from my personal experience of conducting a difficult survey where it was clear that the officers and crew were unprepared and did not know what to expect. The Master was defensive and what should have been a routine technical assessment became a prolonged ordeal that served no one?s interests. Across the industry, a gap exists between the expectations of surveyors and crews. This is not due to incompetence or ill will on either side, it simply stems from different professional backgrounds, training and perspectives.
This book aims to bridge that gap by providing mariners with clear, practical and actionable guidance on how to prepare for, participate in and learn from the survey process. Written from the viewpoint of someone who understands the operational realities that both crews and surveyors face, the approach here is practical rather than academic. While some background on regulations and procedures is provided, the focus remains on what crews can do to shape better outcomes. By understanding the information that surveyors need and how they undertake assessments, mariners can turn potentially difficult interactions into collaborative efforts, working together toward safe, compliant operations.
Each chapter includes detailed preparation tips and advice on avoiding common pitfalls, illustrated by real-world examples drawn from my own experience and that of trusted colleagues.
